Monkey Wrench FTW!

In the previous post I noted that (the old S. 22) the Omnibus Public Land Management Act, failed miserably. Looks like I was wrong and Edward Abby would be ecstatic!

the_monkey_wrench_ganglargeWhile I was out, it seems Congress was able to work some of their magic (because I know of no other word to describe how it was done) and got the bill attached to what was H.R. 146, or the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Battlefield Protection Act. What? You don’t understand. Neither do I.  As I understand it , this then created the new H.R. 146 or the Omnibus Public Land Management Act, which Obama signed into law on March 30th, 2009. To be honest, I have no idea how this worked, and it took me all morning to confirm that what I heard was true (i.e., it passed, then failed, then was amended to another bill which passed both the house and senate to finally be signed into law).

No matter what the details are regarding how this bill was pushed through to Obama’s desk, the addition of these 2 million acres is a huge win for wilderness advocates (and a huge loss for the ORV’ing  and “Small Government” community). That aside, it could be a huge win for those of us in land management who are unhappy with the status quo.

Don’t know about you, but it looks to me like we’re getting the change we asked for….

  1. Hi Andrew,

I enjoyed this latest post on the Omnibus Public Land Management Act. You have an interesting perspective on the Feds and the status quo. Maybe we (oops gave it away that I’m a fed) can now get some work done on the lands we manage.

I hope we are not only getting the change we asked for but the change we need.

    Regards,
    Vener
